Dear Parents and Carers
Strike Action 5th July 2016 and Reminder - Inset Day 8th July 2016
Strike Action Tuesday 5th July 2016
As you may be aware from the extensive coverage in the national and local press, we have been informed by the National Union of Teachers of their intention to take Industrial action, in the form of a strike, on Tuesday 5th July 2016.
This action is not against the College itself but is part of National Industrial action organised by the NUT.
There is no requirement on the unions to inform us of which members of staff will take action on this day and it may be that they will not know themselves, as there is no obligation on members of unions to obey a strike call. We have waited as late as possible, in case the unions’ action was cancelled, but at this point it appears as though it will definitely go ahead.
Neither the Governing Body nor the Headteacher is legally allowed to close the College in ‘sympathy’ with the strike and we will not do so. However, our main concern is the safety of our students. Given the number of teachers potentially involved we will not be able to run a normal timetable on this day and so the College will be open for Year 10 only on this day. These students are preparing for public examinations and if their teacher is absent for a lesson they will be involved in supervised study with access to computers.
The College will be closed to students in Years 7, 8 and 9. I apologise for the inconvenience this will cause but would ask that you make arrangements for a place of safety, which may be your home, to which your child can go, if, as expected, we have to close.
We must all hope that the issues over which the industrial action has arisen are resolved as soon as possible. Should the situation change over the next few days I will contact you again.
Inset Day – Friday 8th July 2016
Can I take this opportunity to remind you that the College is closed on Friday 8th July 2016 to all students for a Staff Inset Day.
