Year 11 Baselining Examinations

St Mary's Catholic College Wallasey

16th September 2016

Dear Parent and Carers

Year 11 Baselining Examinations in English and mathematics

We are delighted with the start that our students have made to this academic year. There is much that is new and our students have responded very positively to the changes. As we shared towards the end of the last academic year, there will be many exciting changes happening this year as we embrace the benefits of working collaboratively with the schools belonging to the Holy Family Catholic Multi Academy Trust and, in particular, St John Plessington.

Can I take this opportunity to thank you for the support you have given to your children, and us, in sending them in so smartly dressed and meeting our College uniform requirements. The new College bags look very smart indeed and we have already had a number of positive comments from the public about them.

We all know how crucial success in English and mathematics is to our students taking their next steps in education and training and ultimately to their employability. I wanted you to be aware of the rationale for the examinations we have informed our Year 11 students about today in College.

As we have shared with you previously your children will be the first to sit the new GCSEs in English and mathematics next summer, when grades will be on the 1 to 9 scale rather than A*- G. As with all schools nationally we want to ensure that we have an accurate view of the current performance of students against the new English and mathematics specifications. We have joined a national organisation that consists of more than a thousand secondary schools who have produced examination papers that we believe will give an accurate indicator of the current level of performance of students against the new specifications. Analysis of the results of these examinations will enable us to address any gaps before the real GCSE examination in the summer.

We have decided that our Year 11 students will undertake these tests next week so that we have a baseline for our Year 11 students at the start of this crucial year. The outcomes will inform our curriculum and intervention plans for the rest of the academic year.

There will be other mock examination practice over the year which will enable us to see the progress students have made in addressing any weaknesses identified in these baseline tests.

Thank you again for your support. Working in partnership we will secure the best possible educational outcomes for your child.

Yours sincerely

Mr A Boyle
