Walking in memory of Josh...

Friends of Joshua Upton took part in the Wirral Coastal Walk in memory of the St Mary's student who lost his life during the Easter holidays.

Poignantly, the route of the annual sponsored walk, from Seacombe Ferry to Thurstaston, took walkers right past the place where Josh was injured in a cycling accident.

The 15-year-old died on April 10 as a result of injuries he received six days previously, after riding his bike downhill and crashing into railings near Wallasey Promenade.

The popular Year 10 student was also a keen member of the 12th Wallasey Scout Group who have launched the Joshua Upton Memorial Fund to support the family in their loss.

Fellow Scouts and other friends completed the 15-mile Wirral Coastal Walk, which is organised annually by The Rotary Club of North Wirral.

Andrew Pickersgill, leader of the 12th Wallasey Scouts, said: 'Many people have been in contact wishing to help or make a donation to support Josh’s family so we have set up the fund to ensure Josh's final journey is not something the family need to worry about'.

He added: 'Josh was fine young man and a Scout to the core, as no challenge was too great or task too demanding, and he would always do his best.

'His best was more than anybody could wish for and he worked hard to achieve both his Chief Scout silver and gold awards.'

Parents Anthony and Paula said in a family statement: 'Joshua was always happy, he always had a smile on his face.

'He was our gentle loving son and brother and would do anything for anybody.

'He always put others before himself, often going out of his way to help others.'

They added: 'Joshua was a huge Everton supporter and massive fan of Bear Grylls. He just lived for his Scouting.'
