Key Stage 4 Dance

BTEC Level 2 First Award in Performing Arts: Dance

BTEC Dance at KS4 is taught over the two years. Students will learn to perform, choreograph and appreciate their own work and that of professional dance works. The course follows the Pearson BTEC syllabus looking specifically at three units of work.

UNIT 1 Individual Showcase – Work that is externally assessed following a set criteria. Students will be expected to practically choreograph a piece of work with their peers and perform the work for assessment.

Unit 2 Preparation, Performance and production – Students will study different dance genres which include; Contemporary dance, Jazz dance, street dance and Musical Theatre. A log book will be compiled showing an understanding of character and dance idea. The students will get the opportunity to perform at the Floral Pavilion theatre as part of a company of dancer’s.

Unit 4 Dance Skills – A series of workshops that explore skills that focus on chosen techniques. Students will self-manage themselves in rehearsals, leading to a final public performance.

This course is mainly led through practical sessions, however, there are elements of written work which are used to support the students understanding of the work. At six form we offer Level 3 National Diploma in Performing Arts; Dance, which is a natural progression to studying Dance in further education, at a higher level.
