Design Technology

Year 7

In Year 7 you will experience a range of activities in Design Technology. Your introduction to this subject is based on Health and Safety and expected standards in the DT area.

Over the course of the year you will move around the subject areas and you will complete three distinctly different units of work:

  • Wooden animal / Game in a box
  • Battery Tester
  • Getting started with food

DT is all about designing and making quality products. You will go right through the design process, following simple briefs and specifications using yourself as a customer. You will design a range of products, developing 2D and 3D skills and you will also experience Computer Aided Design.

There will be great emphasis on building your skills, knowledge and confidence with tools and machinery, working safely with a variety of resistant materials, graphic and food products.

Parents can help by making sure that you are equipped for all lessons, especially for Food Technology practical lessons. Ingredients and methods are available from subject tutors and the school website.

Year 8

In Year 8 you will continue to build on your experiences in Year 7.

Over the course of the year you will again move around the subject areas and cover a variety of topics. You will complete three distinctly different units of work in Year 8:

  • Mechanical toy
  • Plastic Sports Trophy/Desk Tidy
  • Bakers Heaven

As in Year 7, DT is about making quality products. In the mechanical toy unit, you will go through the design process, following a set brief, forming a specification and developing distinct design proposals for a client of your choice. You will manufacture your toy, and then evaluate it in consultation with your client.

In the Plastic Sports Trophy unit, you will understand the key properties that makes plastic a suitable material to use for products and will produce a sports trophy/desk tidy based on a chosen Olympic sport.

For Bakers Heaven the pupils will be learning about the function of ingredients in baked products. They will also be able to modify recipes in accordance with healthy eating rules.

Year 9

In Year 9 you will continue to build on your experiences in Year 8.

Over the course of the year you will again move around the subject areas and cover a variety of topics. You will complete three distinctly different units of work in Year 8:

  • Photo Frame
  • CD Project
  • Health Eating

In the photo frame you will be learning about various design movements. You will be asked to design and make a quality product for a user of your choice. The photo frame should reflect a design movement or designer of your choice.

In the CD project you will design and make a CD greetings card for a client of your choice. The project will need you to research, analyse, design and make a product using the CAD package Techsoft 2D. The unit will build on the skills covered in year 7 using the same package. The product should be of high quality.

For Health Eating the pupils will make a range of healthy eating products which are balanced and nutritionally beneficial. They will also learn the nutritional requirements that make up a balanced diet.
