St Mary's Catholic College
A Voluntary Aided Academy

Key Stage 3

Students will learn French in Year 7 and French or German in years 8 and 9. Students are taught in sets according to their ability, which enable them to progress at their own pace and with confidence.

Students study topics which enable them to talk about themselves and others, their house and home and the world around them, whilst also following a comprehensive programme of grammar which will give them the confidence to manipulate the language independently.

The learning programme covers the four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing and students are assessed on their ability in all of these skills. There are also weekly homeworks, including regular vocabulary tests, which are designed to consolidate and extend the learning of the students. The Key Stage 3 curriculum provides the necessary grounding in vocabulary and grammar skills to enable students to access GCSE.

Cultural experience is a high priority, so students will also study French film and authentic texts. A trip to France during the course of KS3 further embeds the cultural experience while enabling students to practise their language in an authentic setting.
