The Music Department at St Mary’s Catholic College introduces students to a wide range of musical experiences, including performance, composition, musical history and the Sound and Music Industry. All students in years 7, 8 and 9, study music in line with the National Curriculum. Students are able to choose to study music in years 10, 11, where it is possible to study GCSE and BTEC Music and in years 12 and 13 where students study Subsidiary Diploma in Music Performance.
We aim to involve all students in active music making and listening, no matter someone’s ability of experience. We create opportunities for students to experience performing with the classroom and through extracurricular activities.
We have prepared a number of students for roles within the music industry, many of whom have gone on to gain entry to top music courses at Universities such as Huddersfield University, Liverpool University's Institute of Popular Music, LIPA and even Berkley College of Music in America.
You will be taught and supported by our highly skilled staff, who are excellent musicians in their own right and have a wide experience of roles within the music sphere.
St Mary's music department offers an ideal environment for students to achieve and enjoy music and develop skills that can be used in other subjects and in life outside of College.
KS3 (Year 7-9)
The Aspire curriculum at KS3 allows pupils to develop a range of skills through the subjects of Drama, Music, Politics and Duke of Edinburgh. Each subject is delivered through a variety of topics in order to allow pupils to develop their self-awareness and grow in self-esteem. We encourage pupils to debate, understand and celebrate what it means to be a young person growing up in the twenty first century in a supportive, creative and dynamic atmosphere. We have developed lessons to focus on the diversity of each experience, pupil engagement, and enjoyment and to encourage them to aspire not to have more but be more.
