Sixth Form Information Evening -Tuesday 16th November 6.00pm-8.00pm

Dear Parents and Carers
I am writing to invite you to our Sixth Form Information Evening, taking place on the 16th November between 6pm and 8pm.

Since I last wrote to you at the start of the year, a number of activities have taken place to support your child with learning more about our Sixth Form. Students have been given an understanding of what life looks like academically and socially in Sixth Form through a presentation from the Sixth Form team. They have had a careers assembly outlining how to research the requirements for different professions and students have begun to have careers appointments with our Careers Connect advisor. In Sixth Form there are opportunities to study subjects which have not been offered previously as part of the curriculum and the subject leaders have been into assembly to give students a brief overview of what these entail. It has been lovely to begin to learn more about each student through one to one conversations that have taken place and our Sixth Form leadership team have enjoyed sharing their experiences with students so far.
This week our Sixth Form Subject Student Ambassadors are holding a marketplace during progress and aspiration time for students to learn more about individual subject courses they may be interested in and the opportunities available in Sixth Form.

Our continued partnership with parents and carers is as vital in Sixth Form as it has been to date. Our Sixth Form Information Evening on Tuesday 16th November from 6.00 – 8.00 pm is an essential evening to learn about the courses on offer, the life of a Sixth Form student and how we continue to nurture each student’s talents to prepare them for life beyond St Mary’s Catholic College. There will be a presentation to begin the evening and then an opportunity to talk to subject leaders and Sixth Form students. We will also have representatives from local universities should you have any questions.

It can be difficult for students to know exactly which courses they wish to study at this stage which is why we recommend that they carry out as much research as possible. These websites have been shared with students as they all offer valuable information about careers and course choices:
www.informedchoices.co.uk – This website allows you to select a degree you wish to study and lists what subjects you will need at level 3. Alternatively, you can select 3 courses to study and it will show you what degrees you could study in the future.

www.ucas.com – This website allows you to conduct a search for a course you may wish to pursue after Sixth Form and will list entry requirements for each university which will help students to understand what they need to study.

https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/ – This is the National Careers service website.

https://www.prospects.ac.uk/ – This website has a variety of information about careers and jobs. It also has a quiz which matches skills, motivations and desires to a career which may suit the student.

We look forward to seeing you at our Sixth Form Information Evening on Tuesday 16th November 2021 6.00 – 8.00 pm.

Should you have any queries please do not hesitate to get in touch or speak to us on the evening.
Yours sincerely

Miss J Jones
Director of Sixth form
