Year 10
In Year 10 we follow the Eduqas GCSE Language and Literature syllabus. Our students participate in an exciting and varied programme of English, including studying Shakespeare and a broad range of poems exploring the themes of ‘Love and Relationships’ and ‘Power and Conflict‘.
We also prepare our students for the speaking and listening component of the GCSE course; being part of a performing arts college means that they are well aware of how to capture and sustain the attention of their listener through engaging speech and debates. Problem solving and group tasks are regular features in our lessons, as our students enjoy learning collaboratively and as active members of our community. Developing a lifelong love of English is at the heart of what we do here at St Mary’s Catholic College.

In Year 11 we follow the EDUQAS GCSE Language and Literature syllabus. Our students participate in an exciting and varied programme of English, including studying Shakespeare, Dickens, nonfiction texts and a broad range of poems. Developing a lifelong love of English is at the heart of what we do here at St Mary’s Catholic College and our students particularly enjoy tasks which prepare them for the world of work, further and higher education.
Problem solving and group tasks are regular features in our lessons, as our students enjoy learning collaboratively and as active members of our community. In addition, the skills needed for independent work are also finely tuned in Key Stage 4, preparing our learners for their exciting choices post 16. Our students make excellent progress in English and we are proud of the hard work and commitment of both our learners and our highly skilled team of teachers and teaching assistants.
