Languages

Learning a language has never been more important. As we prepare to leave the EU, English may cease to be the dominant trading language in Europe, so being able to communicate with our nearest neighbours will be essential for our nation. At St Mary’s, the MFL department is committed to providing our students with the language tools required to be successful in today’s markets.

At St Mary’s, the cultural as well as linguistic development of our students is a high priority. We maintain regular pen pal links with our partner schools in France and Germany and also run trips abroad, one in KS3 and one in KS4.

Students follow a programme of study in French, but those who show a talent for languages have the option to study German at GCSE, picking up the new language ab initio, and reaching GCSE standard in 2 years. Both languages are offered to A level standard and many of our students go on to pursue a language degree at University.

Learning a language is the passport to better career prospects, higher earnings, improved communication skills and a broader mind.
