Key Stage 5

French AS Level

In the Sixth form, students have the opportunity to continue their studies in both languages to AS Level and it is at this stage that more independence in the language and a deeper understanding of German culture is developed.

Students study social and technological change alongside highlights of French-speaking artistic culture, including francophone music and cinema.

Students also explore the influence of the past on present-day French-speaking communities. Throughout their studies, they will learn the language in the context of French-speaking countries and the issues and influences which have shaped them. Students will study a text or a film.

The exam is divided into 4 skill based assessments:

45% - Listening, reading and writing exam

25% - Writing exam (translation and essay on a text or a film)

30% - Speaking exam (stimulus card discussion)

The course is divided between different teachers who will teach various aspects of the course. Discrete grammar lessons are also timetabled.

Regular revision classes are offered and student progress is closely monitored to ensure students are on track to reach their full potential in the subject.

French A Level

Students follow the AQA syllabus. They will study technological and social change, looking at diversity and the benefits it brings. They will study highlights of French-speaking artistic culture, including francophone music and cinema, and learn about political engagement and who wields political power in the French-speaking world.

Students also explore the influence of the past on present-day French-speaking communities. Throughout their studies, they will learn the language in the context of French-speaking countries and the issues and influences which have shaped them. Students will study texts and film and have the opportunity to carry out independent research on an area of their choice.
